Are you dreaming of a long-weekend filled with rugged landscapes, adventurous hikes, and unforgettable stargazing? Big Bend National Park, nestled in the remote beauty of West Texas, offers all that and more. Here’s a family-friendly itinerary for a five-day trip that maximizes your time while immersing you in the park's natural splendor. When our family of four visited in November, we followed a similar itinerary, but I made a few tweaks to better maximize your time in the park. Please share your favorite Big Bend adventures in the comments.
DAY 1
Setting the Tone at the Gage Hotel
Kick off your weekend with a stay at the historic Gage Hotel in Marathon, Texas. Most will have a long travel day to West Texas, so a stop at this charming boutique hotel that combines rustic elegance with authentic Texas hospitality will be the perfect prelude to your Big Bend adventure. Jump in the pool, explore the nearby Gage gardens, or take a stroll around the quaint town of Marathon to soak in the tranquility before the adventures begin. You can even treat yourself to a relaxing spa treatment at the Gage Spa, which has its own hydrotherapy pool. End your night with dinner at the hotel’s 12 Gage restaurant and s’mores by one of the fire pits.
DAY 2
Exploring Big Bend’s Rugged Beauty
Morning:
After an early breakfast at the V6 Coffee Bar, hit the road for the 1.5-hour drive from Marathon to Big Bend’s Rio Grande Village. Located near the US - Mexico border, this area offers stunning views of the Rio Grande and serves as a gateway to cross-cultural experiences. Pack your swimsuit to take a dip in the Langford Hot Springs right on the edge of the Rio Grande river which can be reached by hiking an easy half mile trail. Bring a passport if you want to adventure across the river to the Mexican village of Los Baquillas. You can pay a small fee to ferry across the river as well as get a ride to the village that is a half mile from the river crossing point.
TIP: Be sure to stop by one of the visitor centers to pick up a free Junior Ranger Activity Guide if you are traveling with kids.
Midday:
Shift gears and head to the trailhead for the Ernst Tinaja Trail, one of Big Bend’s hidden gems. This off-road hike takes you through dramatic desert canyons to a natural rock basin, or tinaja, that holds water year-round. It’s a short but rewarding hike (about 1 mile), perfect for appreciating the geology of the park.
Evening:
Return to Marathon for the night. Enjoy dinner at a local eatery and rest up for another day of adventure.
DAY 3:
Majestic Mountain Trails and Small-Town Charm
Morning:
Pack-up and check out of the Gage hotel and head to the Chisos Basin, the heart of Big Bend National Park, for a morning hike. The cooler mountain temperatures and breathtaking views make this an ideal spot for trails like Lost Mine Trail (4.8 miles), Window Trail (5.5 miles) or Basin Loop Trail (1.9 miles). All offer unforgettable vistas and a chance to connect with Big Bend’s unique flora and fauna.
Lunch:
Stop by the Chisos Basin Lodge for a friendly service, a hearty meal and and beautiful views.
Afternoon:
Drive to the quirky ghost town of Terlingua, where old mining ruins meet modern-day charm. Stroll around the eclectic shops and galleries, or simply enjoy the desert views as the sun begins to dip.
DAY 4:
Canyon Wonders and a Starry Send-Off
Morning:
Start your day with a hike along the Santa Elena Canyon Trail. This iconic trail takes you along the Rio Grande, where towering limestone cliffs rise dramatically on either side of the river. It’s a 1.7 mile trek that will leave you in awe of nature’s grandeur.
Evening:
Wrap up your trip with dinner at the iconic Starlight Theatre in Terlingua. Savor hearty Tex-Mex fare and enjoy live music as you reflect on your Big Bend journey. This unique venue offers the perfect blend of history and atmosphere to cap off your adventure.
