While store-bought dressings and sauces can be convenient, these are five favorite recipes that come together quickly using everyday ingredients. Five Simple Sauces to Transform Your Protein + Grain Bowls


Classic Vinaigrette

A bright, all-purpose dressing that pairs well with almost any bowl.

Best With: Chicken, salmon, leafy greens, roasted vegetables


  • Ingredients

    • ½ cup extra-virgin olive oil

    • 3 tablespoons vinegar (red wine, white wine, balsamic, or champagne) or fresh lemon juice 

    • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

    • 1 tablespoon maple syrup or honey

    • ¼ teaspoon sea salt

    • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste


  • Directions

    • Whisk together all ingredients or combine in a jar with a lid and shake until well blended.



Basil Vinaigrette

Fresh herbs give this vibrant sauce a bright Mediterranean flavor.

Best With: Chicken, tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, farro, roasted vegetables


  • Ingredients

    • 2 cups packed fresh basil leaves (about 4 ounces)

    • ½ cup extra-virgin olive oil

    • 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar

    • 1 small shallot, roughly chopped

    • 2 garlic cloves

    • 1 teaspoon kosher salt

    • ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)


  • Directions

    • Blend all ingredients in a blender or food processor until smooth. 



Peanut Sauce

Creamy, savory, and slightly sweet with Asian-inspired flavors.

Best With: Shrimp, chicken, tofu, cabbage, carrots, edamame


  • Ingredients

    • ¼ cup creamy peanut butter

    • Juice of 1 lime (about 1 tablespoon)

    • 3 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce

    • 1 tablespoon sesame oil

    • 2 tablespoons warm water

    • 2 tablespoons maple syrup

    • Pinch of red pepper flakes (optional)


  • Directions

    • Whisk together all ingredients until smooth. Add additional warm water, 1 tablespoon at a time, until the sauce reaches your desired consistency.



Tzatziki Sauce

Cool, creamy, and packed with fresh herbs.

Best With: Chicken, lamb, cucumbers, tomatoes, Mediterranean bowls


  • Ingredients

    • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt

    • ½ cup finely grated English cucumber

    • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

    • ½ tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil

    • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh dill

    • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh mint

    • 1 garlic clove, grated

    • ¼ teaspoon sea salt


  • Directions

    • Place the grated cucumber between paper towels or in a clean kitchen towel and squeeze out as much liquid as possible. Stir together all ingredients until well combined. Refrigerate until ready to serve.



Creamy Chipotle Sauce

Smoky, creamy, and just the right amount of spice.

Best With: Sweet potatoes, black beans, avocado, steak, shrimp, Southwest-style bowls


  • Ingredients

    • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt

    • ¼ teaspoon chipotle powder

    • 1 teaspoon fresh lime juice

    • ½ teaspoon kosher salt

    • 2–3 tablespoons water


  • Directions

    • Whisk together the yogurt, chipotle powder, lime juice, and salt. Add water a little at a time until the sauce reaches a smooth, drizzleable consistency.
